Organ
History

St Peter’s first organ was installed in 1880 but was retained only for twelve years, being sold in 1892 to Westham Church close to Pevensey Castle.

A new three-manual instrument was ordered from Hunter’s and originally installed in 1892 in the Lady Chapel on the south side of the chancel.  However, in 1907, it was decided to move the organ to a purpose-built organ chamber on the north side where it continues to reside.

In 1938, JW Walker & Sons were called in to extend the keyboard compass to 61 notes (a full five octaves) and provide a new detached console to replace the integral one on the north side.  The new console was typical of the Walker’s style, having double-touch tabstops;  the original pneumatic action from the old console position was retained but the connection from there to the new console was electric.

Walkers were recalled in 1971 to carry out a comprehensive renovation of the airways, together with a certain amount of work on the action and three new manuals were fitted to the console.  Parallel with this work, Watkins & Watson were asked to provide a humidifier and well as to continue maintaining the blowing equipment as the church had recently installed a new central-heating system.

In 1994, the organ was extensively overhauled by Bishop & Sons of Ipswich.  With the approval of the Diocesan Organ Adviser, some minor tonal modifications were made at the suggestion of the then Director of Music and his Assistant Organist.  A new draw-stop console and pedalboard were installed but the 1971 manuals were retained.  The electrical coupling was converted to low-current single-contact form by the use of analogue electronics.  These electronics allowed the installation of a modern multi-choice settable and lockable memory system.  At the same time, the church installed new power sockets and a high level of lighting inside the organ chamber.

Bishops have been retained to carry out tuning and general maintenance.  The blowing and humidifying equipment are now maintained by Stewart Fothergill of Wareham.
